Mushroom and Amethyst Statement Piece - Copper Bug Jewelry

Amethyst stones are a popular gemstone among designers and fashion enthusiasts and happen to be one of the most sought-after items in my shop. Its vibrant color, varied sizes and interesting shapes make it an ideal gemstone for jewelry. It has a wide tonal range, from pale lavender to dark purple. The soft shades are occasionally referred to as "Rose de France" and can be seen featured in Victorian jewelry.

The deep purple colors are the most valuable, particularly a rich purple with rose flashes. Because they are purple stones, amethyst crystal colors complement both warm and cool colors.

The well-known amethyst rock flaunts its gorgeous purple color in many settings and places. Leonardo Da Vinci expressed that an Amethyst gemstone was capable of vanquishing bad ideas and expanding intellect. The amethyst stone is held sacred to Buddha in Tibet, used as beads to form rosaries.

The Greek word "amethustos" translates to "not drunk". Wine was thought to be a good cure for alcoholism, so people would use goblets to deter themselves from getting inebriated. Amethystos, a beautiful maiden from Greek mythology, is said to have denied Dionysus, the god of wine. According to legend, the maiden prayed to the Gods for chastity and was turned into a white stone as a result. In his grief, the story goes that Dionysus poured wine onto a stone, causing the stone to turn purple. Therefore, the Amethyst is often linked to romantic showing of love and lust. Thus, this gemstone is associated with restraint, temperance, abstinence, and sobriety.

Amethyst Cluster - Copper Bug Jewelry

Metaphysically, Amethyst is a powerful stone that has been used for centuries to protect against negative energy and to promote spiritual growth. It is believed to be a stone of protection, healing, and purification. It can help one to connect with their higher self and open up the third eye chakra. It is also said to bring clarity of mind and aid in decision-making.

Amethyst is being extracted in Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Argentina, as well as in Zambia, Namibia, and other African countries. Typically, South American Amethyst appears to be found in larger sizes than African Amethyst. Still, African Amethyst has a reputation for having a more refined, more vivid color in smaller sizes. Quite dark amethysts, often small in scale, are also mined in Australia.

Over time, I have worked with a wide range of gemstones, yet amethyst keeps surprising me. It is one thing to create pretty trinkets of such beautiful gems, yet another is to understand the story behind each piece that comes to me. As a creative and spiritual person, I like to connect with my stones and the work I do.
