Quartz has been the common chameleon of gemstones throughout history, standing in for more expensive gemstones ranging from Diamond to Jade. But in my opinion, the incredible variety of Quartz should be appreciated for its own sake. I adore all Quartz varieties such as Amethyst, Citrine, Ametrine, Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Onyx, Agates, Chrysoprase, Rutilated Quartz (Rutile Quartz), and other Quartz gemstone varieties and you can find them all often in my work. Rose Quartz color is ashen and delicate powder pink to bright and robust purple. Transparent Rose Quartz or gemmy rose quartz is very rare and is usually so pale that it does not show very much color except in large sizes. This type of rose quartz is most often found in Mozambique but can be found in other parts of the world as well.
The color of Smokey Quartz is variable from brown to black, and sometimes smoky grey colored specimens are included as Smoky Quartz. The cause of the color of Smoky Quartz is in question, but it is almost certainly related to the amount of exposure to radiation that the stone has undergone. 99% of the time, a gemstone offered as Smoky Topaz is this variety of Quartz.
Chalcedony is chemically known as silicon dioxide, and this is the natural chemical structure of all quartz minerals. The variety of Chalcedony is even greater than transparent quartz varieties because it includes Cryptocrystalline Quartz with patterns and a wide range of solid colors. In the Mediterranean region, Chalcedony was being used as early as the Bronze Age. The name Chalcedony is used to describe a species of gemstone and not a single one. Many variations of Chalcedony are below:
This is one type of Chalcedony, whose main character is that it exhibits a transparent but colorful pattern; the stone has multicolored banding that can either be straight or curved. Agate has many other types: Mexican agate, Turritella agate, Greek agate, Brazilian agate, Polyhedroid agate, and Rainbow agate.
This is another select type of chalcedony quartz stone with high clarity. The several platy mineral inclusions found within the crystals produce a particular shimmering appears, or glistening look, that is so unique that it is called aventurescence.
Carnelian, which is also sometimes spelled as Cornelian, is another form of Chalcedony that has a clear to translucent transparency and has a red to brown color.
Chrysoprase is another form of Chalcedony characterized by a green color brought about by nickel oxide.
Heliotrope is a form of Chalcedony that is also known as Bloodstone. It has a high number of red inclusions brought about by iron oxide.
Also sometimes known as Tree Agate, Moss Agate is a form of Chalcedony characterized by fluffy green filament-shaped inclusions, which makes the gemstone look like it has moss within it or blue cheese.
A less-known form of Chalcedony, Mtrololite has a green color attributed to chromium; it also goes by Chrome Chalcedony. This is a gemstone that is principally found in Zimbabwe.
Onyx is a variant of agate that has white and black banding. The varieties of Onyx that have red, orange, or brown colors banded with white are called Sardonyx.
